Having lived in Kyoto for a long time and I've explored much of the city by bicycle. Honestly, it's the best way to escape the Kyoto's crowded tourist zones and truly discover the heart of the city.
So, when Noru Kyoto Bike Tours invited me to try one of their cycling tours, I was eager to see what they had in store. And I have to say that this was very much a "locals" guided tour of Kyoto.
I found that Noru Kyoto Bike Tours provide intimate guided tours through Kyoto's suburban backstreets that lead to some of Kyoto’s hidden gems. The tour revealed a side of Japan's cultural capital that most tourists miss out on.
Located in the old center of Japan's ancient capital, Kyoto, Noru Kyoto Bike Tours provides a fleet of comfortable electric bicycles. With their e-bikes, they guide small groups (with a maximum of 8 people) through the lesser-known parts of Kyoto.
Noru is owned and run by Ross McLean, a Canadian who has called Kyoto home for nearly two decades. His knowledge of the city comes through in these tours, and is reflected in the positive reviews from customers worldwide.
Our guide for the day was Michael, an American who used to work as a history and social studies teacher at a local Kyoto high school.
Being a longtime Kyoto resident, I honestly didn’t expect to learn anything new. But to my surprise, Michael shared fascinating insights and stories that I had never heard before! His passion and expertise made the tour an outstanding experience.
Noru Kyoto Bike Tours reveal a side of Kyoto that goes beyond the typical tourist path. They take their customers to places that I personally recommend to my own friends when they visit Kyoto.
Without giving too much away, here’s why these sites offer a deep look into Japanese local culture.
One of the tour’s standout moments is a visit to an iconic Shinto shrine, cherished by locals as a place to foster strong academics. Its elegant simplicity and time-honored traditions offer an inviting glimpse into Kyoto’s spiritual legacy, leaving you with a sense of calm and wonder that only genuine cultural encounters can provide.
Without giving too much away, let me just say that the architecture alone is worth the visit. The intricate golden elements and delicate wood carvings are details that capture your attention as you enter this shrine. It will hopefully give you a glimpse of the Momoyama period (1573-1603), when it was built! But to really appreciate the cultural significance and atmosphere of this place, you’ll have to experience it firsthand.
Step away from the familiar crowds of Gion and explore a quiet, historic geisha district tucked away in Kyoto's backstreets. This Kyoto hidden gem remains largely off the beaten path. Its narrow lanes and storied architecture echo the graceful charm of old Kyoto, inviting you to experience more than just the sights. Here, you can truly immerse yourself in the enduring cultural spirit and subtle allure that define the city’s rich heritage.
Beyond the foothills where thousands of tourist gather at the Golden Pavilion, we rode into intimate neighborhoods that echo the spirit of old Kyoto. The tour leads you through these lesser-known areas, where historic architecture speak volumes about the city’s past. We were taken to a temple so secluded that we only saw three other people there!
This is a great place to take guests because it’s a place that encourages you to slow down, breathe, and simply be present in the moment. The moment we stepped into the temple, a sense of calm washed over the group. The of wonder of this temple isn’t just in its physical surroundings but in the atmosphere it creates.
Our journey continued downhill to a local shrine, a peaceful spot tucked away from the busy city streets. Although the ancient shrine itself is a lovely place to visit, it’s what lies just next door that turned out to be the real treat.
A surprise awaits near a historic shrine where a local delicacy—so popular that most of the year involves long lines—is served in exclusive reserved seating. Thanks to Noru’s special arrangement, our group enjoyed this unique perk: a private room and dedicated seats, a privilege not available to everyone (and a nod to my personal connection, having once taught one of the owner’s daughters!). This insider benefit makes the culinary experience as memorable as it is delicious.
The tour also winds through huge temple grounds that serve as peaceful retreats from the noise of the city streets. Here, the blend of nature and traditional design invites quiet reflection, allowing you to slow down, breathe, and immerse yourself in Kyoto’s meditative ambiance. Each temple stop is more than just a destination—it’s a moment of genuine introspection and cultural discovery.
While I won’t unveil every single stop along the route, rest assured that Noru Kyoto Bike Tours masterfully balances discovery with discretion. Every carefully chosen highlight promises a unique encounter with Kyoto’s layered history and enduring charm, leaving you with memories to explore long after the tour ends.

Because I live in Kyoto, I'm very critical of the traditional tourist spots that have become overcrowded. They have become too busy most of the year and it takes away from the peaceful Kyoto experience people are looking for. In fact, these days I even encourage my friends who come to Kyoto to avoid hot spots like Fushimi Inari Taisha and the Golden Pavilion.
